The American superstar and her brother co-writer and co-producer Finneas O'Connell’s third LP, of predominantly soft, muted, low key and tenderly whispered, sighing and delicately style with understated release without advance singles. Lunch is the most pop-like and reminiscent of her earlier work, with a syncopated beat and sprightly vocals, and one that flirts with lesbian lust (“I could eat that girl for lunch as she dances on the tongue”). But opener Skinny set the musical tone for most of the album, a low-key, acoustic guitar song with orchestral strings and melancholy melody, soulful warbles, one casting doubts on her early fame, about being in “a bird in a cage” and “Am I acting my age now? … Am I already on the way out?” Eilish is unafraid to experiment with styles and self-question sorrow. Chihiro has a low-key catchiness with spongey bass, while Birds of A Feather is a rather beautiful love song with a bittersweet pledge, pledging love until “I rot away, dead and buried … in the casket that you carried”. Wildflower is a whispery wistful, moody acoustic number, but The Greatest, and Bittersuite are more interesting standouts moving into the tender closing track, Blue, a love song that could refer to another star, or herself, “too afraid to step outside, paranoid and petrified of what you’ve heard”. So where do you go after achieving such massive fame with your first two releases? Perhaps, as expressed in the very title of this album, in a more introverted, ambiguous direction, with moody, uncertain direction, but yet still very strong songwriting. Out on Darkroom/Interscope Records.
