A fabulously uplifting soul, gospel and funk release the the family band who release their first LP four decades into their career, fronted by the supreme voice of West Point, Mississippi’s Annie Caldwell, alongside her daughters, husband and god-daughter. This album has come about due to a chance crate-digging discovery of a 1974 song she had written for gospel group the Staples Jr Singers, and after a phone call, ended up on David Byrne’s label Luaka Bop. Annie’s voice has a range, grit, charisma and soaring power as great as anyone around, and these tracks have all flowing freedom of dancefloor and soulful gospel played live by individuals who know each other intimately. Wrong and I Made It, have a catchy groove with an autobiographical lyrics, while much the rest of the album is a wonderful improvisational blues, funk, soul and gospel flow, particularly the title track, all the way to the finish. The spirit and its musical goodness just pulls you in. A rare fairy tale in the music business - the real deal finally getting a deal they really deserve. Saved in all sort of ways. Hallelujah! Out on Luaka Bop.
