A rite of passage to the senses, this short, sharp, experimental noise rock debut LP release by the New York quartet feels like being dropped into a growling, stop-start pinball machine, but the experience is weirdly rewarding. With 10 tracks in a little over 20 minutes, there is little time to ponder the screaming, indecipherable lyrics the extraordinary grunts, growls, squeals and shouts of Zack Borzone, over a mesmeric, anarchic, but impressive musicianship of Saguiv Rosenstock (guitar), Jack Tobias (synth and electronics), and Sam Pickard (drums). Their interplay is fascinating, but it’s Pickard though who stands out the most, from delicately fast high-hat fidgets to machine gun-like assaults right across the kit, his percussion is a brilliant cross-rhythmic swirl of creativity. This is a band really pushing the envelope. Too much at once, even for a short album? It will grow on you. Perhaps try Animal Breath Already Breathing, Sickle Walk, Tear Pusher, Iron Feet, or Castrato Raw (Fullback) to get into their unwieldy but wonderful different musical world. Out on AD 93.
