A sublimely beautiful, poetic, delicate and profound new LP by American singer-songwriter Will Oldham, his first since 2019’s I Made A Place and the collaborative albums of 2021 – Superwolves with Matt Sweeney and Blind Date Party with Bill Callahan. This really is a gem, with Oldham on top form, filled with lovely lines and moving stories, his delicate folk singer style joined by occasional violin, organ, viola, mandolin, saxophone, and some backing vocals by Dane Waters. There are many outstanding moments, including Crazy Blue Bells (“Dust that's gathered on our hearts / Will be blown and dispersed / Our interest in the darker arts / No longer coming first”), Bananas, the mutability theme of Like It Or Not, Blood Of The Wine, Rise and Rule (She Was Born in Hololulu), and Behold! Be Hold! (“I want to make music all the time … I want to be wholly consumed rhyme”). Delicately musical, engagingly philosophical. Out on Domino.
