The wild, sharp-suited Swedish garage rockers fronted by the charismatic Howlin' Pelle Almqvist return after 11 years’ absence with a punchy, catchy fun LP based on the idea of a fictional sixth band member, manager and sole songwriter with songs newly discovered. Out of vogue for a while in their now 30-year-career, their infectious sense of fun is back in view, especially after recently supporting the Arctic Monkeys on tour. Same old Hives? Mostly, though now with a louder richer bass sound, rawer, more distorted guitars and the album was mostly recorded in Stockholm at ABBA’s Benny Anderson’s studio, where their live feel is very much captured. Otherwise this is classic Hives, with belting, singalong numbers fizzing with fierce energy. Standouts include Countdown To Shutdown, Rigor Mortis Radio, Bogus Operandi, and the frenetic closer Step Out Of the Way, but overall, best seen in concert. Self-released on The Hives AB.
