French artist Héloïse Letissier aka Chris, now using the he/his pronoun, returns with a passionate, epic, sensual, existential synth-pop triple LP odyssey, fuelled by the grief over mother’s death, and expressed through concepts of inner angel voices, including a guest appearance by Madonna. Standouts include the tracks Tears Can Be So Soft, Marvin Descending (channelling a dash of Gaye), A Day In The Water, some echoes of Johann Pachelbel on Full of Life. Madonna appears on three tracks, the sometimes as a spoken word vocal, sometimes backing singer, but best is perhaps the soaring rock epic Lick The Light Out. Other numbers to sink into include True Love (featuring 070 Shake) and the candid To Be Honest. An artist now perhaps enjoying a peak of their career, albeit one that comes from a dark place, with soaring voice and taking that particular form of sophisticated, intellectual electro-pop to mainstream maturity.
