Wonderful debut by the Irish pop-country singer with a great voice – Dublin’s Ciara Mary Alice Thompson has the melodies of Dolly, the panache of Glen Campbell, the range of Kate Bush, but above all a searing wit powered by self-deprecation and a caustically humorous instinct for tragedy. The music hits a familiar style and stride with often soaring tunes and beautiful melodies, and aside from the bizarre spelling on the title and the anarchic cover art, but they are packed with killer lines and dark emotions. Nashville is all about depression, and is inspired by someone who was the life and soul of the party for several months before planning to emigrate to California before suicide. “I'm tired of looking at this body, I'm tirеd of living in this brain”. I Don’t Really Care For You is really about self-loathing. “I just spent sevеn hours looking at old pics of me / Tryna pinpoint where the bitch began, Somewhere after the Passion of Christ/ And before I had an Instagram.” Peter Bogdanovich is a twisted love song to the film director: “Everything is boring, every day, there's more nothing to do/ My daddy didn't love me, so I guess I moved on to you.” Then there’s the fiercely ironic Lonely (God I bet if there was a god / I'd be killing him / But who needs god / When I have Robbie Williams?) or indeed the drily, darkly humorous Every Bottle (Is My Boyfriend). No More Virgos changes the style to more electro-pop and is more about obsession with astrology and being a problem person for your friends by constantly going for the same guy over and over again. It seems that CMAT’s energy and wit on such subjects endless, as is her musical talent. A true talent and force to be reckoned with, but what will happen when she finds happiness?
