A mesmerically rich, beautifully swirling fusion of acoustic and flamenco guitar, symphonic folk, classic and jazz by by the Grizzly Bear guitarist and vocalist whose voice has the sensitivity, haunting warmth and honest of Elliott Smith, in this delicious solo debut. The first four tracks particularly are as arresting and vital as any album’s start this year, particularly standout track Shadow In The Frame, a previous Song of the Day, described by the New Mexico-based musician as a contemplation of mortality amid the ancient and enchanting landscape of the American southwest, which colours the whole album. The title track is another standout as is Unpeopled Space, and It’s A Passage, and later the shimmering I’ll Wait For Your Visit. Rossen is chiefly a guitarist, but he created this album in his now adopted home of Santa Fe, and added upright bass, cello and woodwind to his many talents, playing all the parts himself, not to mention evocatively lovely vocal overdubs. A triumph of wondrous, textured beauty. Out on Warp Records.
