Their catchy, cute, cheeky debut single Chaise Longue made them the indie darlings of 2021, but the debut LP by Isle of Wight pair Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers proves they have the chops for similar magic. Wet Leg’s style and creative process seems to be borne of fun and silliness, gently filthy innuendo and witty wordplay with that fits the perfect pop formula, not too complex, and just repetitive enough to take hold. It’s hard to beat the magic of that first single, but they are clearly, if not about to become world famous, can continue to work in this way, with songs such as Wet Dream, or the clever meta-song with beautiful shimmering guitar buildup, Too Late Now, which ultimately seeks “a bubble bath to set me on a higher path”. But behind the winking playfulness, there’s also deeper emotions, and relationship frustrations at large on the swear Ur Mum, or the caustically angry Piece of Shit behind the high-voiced at times Deerfhoof cuteness of their delivery, and with no shortage of wit, such as on the song Loving You, with “I hope you choke on your girlfriend.” There’s also a fine variation musically, such as one the psychedelic I Don’t Wanna Go Out. And overall, yet another production triumph by the ever astute Dan Carey, who has become a high-quality watermark across all forms of indie with a magic touch that let’s alternative artists fully express themselves without imposing any style on them other than maintaining their freshness. Wet Leg may have had a lot of hype, but if they keep up their own fun formula, they are will continue to go places. Out on Domino.
