Like a bizarre recipe filled with flavours that should not mix, but by some strange alchemy really work, an extraordinary fusion of electronica, ambient, drum’n’bass, jazz, prog, pop, and blasts of dark metal by the Chicago producer, composer, and multi-instrumentalist Angel Marcloid, a complex, heady fusion that must been heard to be believed. That is evident most of all in the unwieldily titled and former Song of the Day I Couldn't Have Been BoRn At ThE wRoNg TiMe Because I Was Never Even Born LOL!, but there are must as many surprises in store throughout this release, from opener, It Is Happening Again (Thank You, Council Of Saturn!), in which sprightly drumming mix initially what initially feels like a sweet, sugary TV theme, but then suddenly breaks into the vocal onslaught of dark metal, before moving into infinitely mind-boggling keyboard noodles. What is this madness (or genius) at play? Other ear-raising standouts include the crash-bang sounds, disembodied voices and flighty delicate woodwinds of Inlet/Paraklesis, the heavy prog rock oddness of Paraclete Bhishajyati, the sinister jazz of The Great Allower, the gentle, relaxing ambient sounds of Gleam Beam, the gentle, ethereally voiced electronic of Everything & Everywhere Is A Divine Mirror, not mention Above All Else I Want To See, and the eventual arrival of final track Novaturient Wave-Form Collapse. A times relaxing, uplifting and also abrasive, this is a musical meal that takes time to digest, but one that challenges and rewards in many qualities and quantities. Welcome to a new genre-crossing world. Perhaps the strangest and wonderfully weirdest album of the year. Out on Hausu Mountain.
