Classy, and timelessly classic piano pop and more debut by the Paris-based trio of Lewis Lazar, Christopher Willatt and Finnish musician Julia Johansen filled with melting, moving ballads, intimate folk songs, catchy bangers and generally vision of the world suspended in a timeless place when conceived in Covid lockdown. Poignant, wistful, sweet falsetto and sounding like something from the 70s recalling solo John Lennon to Harry Nilsson, it’s a beautiful piece of work, filled with intelligence, subtlety and maturity, and sometimes dark lyrics with clever detail. Among the many standouts are opener Tramp Like You (“I wanna be a tramp like you I wanna have all my tales broken”), Hail Mary (“Whoever sets eyes on you with the ball and chain and the attitude says it’s true / yes it’s true / two records with the same old song / and your grandma’s jacket with the pictures on that you drew / yes you drew / Hail Mary / Don’t you want to buy me a new pair of high heel shoes?”), the catchy psych-rock-pop fusion RBH, Sailor Song and closer, and gentle closing track Modern Love. Out on 22TWENTY.
