Crisp, clean, refined, witty, cleverly pared-back electro-pop by the Brighton band of two decades and fronted by David Best with this very fine LP released in late September. Opener and title track is a funky dancefloor number with Best’s low-key sotto voce voice that at times echoes that of The The’s Matt Johnson. Non-Essential Worker then builds into krautrock momentum from fast oscillating synths and steady drumbeat. Next, Sweat syncopates beautifully, and Digital Hangover is a classic of droll, catchy electro-pop, while Flux onwards continues the album in the same vein. Olympian Heights is also fabulously catchy funk-pop number and Oops is delightfully odd. Much to enjoy here from this band who have delivered 20 years of top quality, thrumming, tuneful momentum.
