Shirley Manson and co return with their seventh, a double LP filled with banging cyber-punk anger, dark, seething, atmosphere, politics and personal battles. It’s one of their best since the 90s, and stylistically includes echoes of Roxy Music, Depeche Mode, New Order and The Human League. Uncompromising as ever, Manson takes no prisoners on opener The Men Who Rule The World, attacking the patriarchal history of power and how “they’ve made a fucking mess … the worship of success” leading to the threat to all living things. There’s a whole list of current evils reeling through the album, but there’s also no shortage of personal anxiety from Uncomfortably Me to A Woman Destroyed, where industrial meets rock meets goth meets an electronica film noir. Feisty and provocatively filthy, on Godhead, she whispers, “If I had a dick, would you blow it?” Much to enjoy here, with a welcome, substantial album, and admirably still kicking out at all the shit of things.
