A stylish, punchy, truly eclectic release by the Ghanaian-Australian singer from Canberra, (real name Kofi Owusu-Ansah) with a potent mash of hip-hop, punk, funk, metal, soul and electro-pop, and a running lyrical metaphor of cockroaches. That metaphor comes in several songs, including Leaving The Light, Stay Blessed (“I'm a roach that a god is coming after / Just a vessel for a natural disaster”) and of course The Roach. The overall theme centres on a character dealing with fights and problems and trying to overcome them. Another standout includes the funky That’s Life (A Swamp) and What Comes Will Come, a synth-pop-rap hybrid with dashes of goth-rock. A bit of a mixed bag compared to his previous, Smiling With No Teeth, with various oddball, jazzy R&B fill-ins, but still a striking original voice. Out on Ourness / AWAL.
