After a series of strong singles, a sumptuous, brilliantly luxuriant debut by the London singer, DJ and model, inspired by 60s and 70s styles, particularly Françoise Hardy, French pop, psychedelia, soul, yé-yé girls and vintage cinema. Overall, with a rich style boosted by producer Jagz Kooner, known also at the desk for Sabres Of Paradise and Primal Scream, the album is stacked with strings and horns, there is a grandly cinematic feel, a sense of the singer’s life story to date – loves and losses, struggles, triumphs and fantasies. Her best vocal performance comes on the soaring title track, which also comes with a French version on YouTube. Cannonball meanwhile has a glamorous swing rhythm with a video that nods to Diana Rigg’s Avengers persona. Other standouts include the harmonica-stomp of What You Doin’ (with Miles Kane), the revving up opener Deep End, the slower, stylish cool of Shot Gun and curtain-down closer Take A Bow. Out on Needle Mythology.
