Ethereal, shimmering, poetic, sensual delicate experimental folk and synth-pop in this substantial 17-track sixth LP, following 2021’s Mythopoetics, by the New York singer-songwriter and producer Nandi Rose Plunkett, with lingering release about pain, grief, but resilience and beauty. It was made after a miscarriage, and hearing of her mother-in-law’s cancer diagnosis. There is starkness to the beauty in her sound and lyrics, the opening track including the heartbreaking lines: “Watching the sun set at 4pm / Holding thе shape of another hand / You might say something's missing … So I put my hands into the earth / And I thank you, you were my first / You made me a mother.” Likewise on another standout, Figurine - “I love you when it’s snowing / I love you when it’s warm / I felt it growing in me / And now everything is gone.” But despite this prevalent melancholy, there is much serenity, images of sunsets, birdsong, and more, such on the spoken, stripped back Heartwood, the lilting piano, rich vocal harmonies and reverberating electronica of I-90 (“Now I'm watchin' the sunset in the rearview mirror and they’re settin' fireworks off on I-90”). Overall, this is a slow, shimmering album, contemplative and at times rather exquisite in arrangements and sense of space. It really takes its time, and requires long listens, but the final track lifts the mood and pace, with an optimistic turn: “I’m going out where the world is bright / And the air is light and laced with maple / I’m gonna love my life / I’ll see you at the Maypole.” Out on ANTI- Records.
