The London-based Welsh electronic artist, DJ and producer’s fourth LP takes a new mainstream turn, celebrating daydreaming and emancipated creativity through electronica and dance music, combining ambience and beats with guest collaborators Bicep, Tom Rowlands of The Chemical Brothers, and George Daniel. This a generally ecstatic, light and sensual release, flitting between smooth, airy vocals and a sheen of synths put your hands-in-the-air, gently galloping techo beats, although there are some moments of a darker hue. The title track combines all in toe-tapping fashion, with Owens’ repeating sensual vocals and a clever overlapping rhythm. Opener Dark Angel steps gradually into eventual leaping electronica clubby joy with simple chord changes, beats and synths. The single Love You Got, perhaps a standout, combines the darker chords and heartbreak before skipping into that infectious dance beat again. While there’s no shortage of euphoria, there are subtle, idiosyncratic touches in between standard dance music phrasing. The dance momentum continues unstoppably from Higher to the intricate Sunshine, while final track Trust and Desire takes a more reflective, tender turn. Out on new label dh2, part of Dirty Hit Records.
