Theatrical, wittily delivered and filled with wonderfully literate and emotive narratives and images, the new album by the Edinburgh indie singer-songwriter very much keeps up the striking, thrumming single Caterpillar, previously highlighted on Song of the Day. Standouts also include the shimmering New Rhododendrons, and the splendidly titled and wistful The Mauritian Badminton Doubles Champion, 1973. There’s a joyous droll swagger to Bakerloo, Unbecoming, a beautiful piano tinker on Your Ceremony. Hawk’s style is somewhere between Morrissey’s early solo career, and Divine Comedy, while the, intimate titled track even has a touch of Leonard Cohen about it. Poetic, unpredictable and very classy. Out. on Hawk, Pearson & Maurice.
