Crisp, soulful, lush, soaring pop, with a Bollywood flavour, as one of the finest ever British vocalists releases a first collaborative full LP with producer and musician Sean Dickson. They previously combined on the disco track Josephine Baker on Dickson’s 2016 debut Ft. The title track opener is decorated with Bollywood-style orchestral strings, a thread throughout, with funky beats and bass, and there’s even grander luxuriance two tracks later on Beautiful. Diamond Dust is a stomping disco track, while Maybe combines bouncing synths and guitar arpeggios. Another standout is the more political seventh track, The Skin I’m In, driven by around George Floyd and Black Lives Matter movement, describing various forms of unrest: “I lie awake at night cos I listened to a guy theorise about the rise of the Reich,” and later: “They don't believe, I can't breathe / All they see, is the skin I'm in / If All Lives Matter, Black Lives Matter.” A strong album, often absolutely beautiful, occasionally overblown on the production side, with beats and instrumentals slightly drowning out McAlmont’s voice, which comes out best when more exposed, such as on the slower, more intimate Transatlantic. David McAlmont adds a golden touch to any song. Out on Plastique Recordings.
