Nearly four decades into the New Jersey trio’s prolific career, Ira Kaplan Georgia Hubley and James McNew’s 17th studio LP one of their best, mesmeric, krautrock-inspired, semi-improvisational, shoegaze indie. Jangly guitar textures intertwine with Ira Kaplan’s soft, gentle voice and the driving rhythms of Hubley’s drums and McNew’s bass. The album is all about immersive momentum, but standouts include opener Sinatra Drive Breakdown, Fallout, the gentler build and feedback on Aselestine, or the even softer, stripped back Apology Letter, Brain Capers and closer Miles Away. A cult band, like Guided By Voices, who keep on doing what they do because they must, with acclaim as a bonus. Out on Matador Records.
