Rich storytelling, engaging melodies, subtle humour and perfect, gentle pacing out this strong, highly enjoyable loosely concept album of Americana, country and folk by the North Carolina five-piece led by MC Taylor. Nu-Grape comes with a mischievous marketing video, but finally breaks into a pleasing, easy-paced country-funk, California King, with it’s gentle keyboard touches, flows like a chilled-out Grateful Dead offering, The Wondering is a breezy summer number, and the title track is lovely, flowing New Orleans-style song. Opener 20 Years and A Nickel is a touching meta-song. Other standouts include Jesus Is Bored and Shinbone, all the way to the Dylanesque closer, Sunset On The Faders. An album that feels so easily flowing, but that’s much much harder than it sounds. Filled with subtle nuance and wistful tenderness, and wonderfully relaxing. Out on Merge Records.
