A gorgeous, entrancing debut by the Tunisian percussionist joined by fellow Tunisian violin player Radhi Chaouali and Palestinian bouzouk player Jalal Nader in a brilliant fusion of North African, Middle Eastern and western styles to evoke the voices of rivers. From opener Souffles du Nil to the 18-minute closing track Cheminement du Tigre, this is an album, nine years in the making, that constantly takes us to new places with movement, emotion and a wealth of textures, with melodies that evoke strong feelings and a storyline. Mostly it is instrumental, but on Namami Gange there are electronic elements alongside the xylophone, and stuttering vocals with Planningtorock, with a more dreamlike voice on Appel Du Danube. Other standouts include the strident Envol du Mékong, the sprightly, spicy ripples of Les Cloches de Yamuna and the complex, dark rhythms and squiggly sounds of Echos de Medjerda with Swedish electronic producer Olof Dreijer, one half of the electronica duo The Knife, but the whole eight-track experience is something in which to immerse with wonder. Out on Erol Alkan’s label – Phantasy Sound.
