Classy, emotive, mature songwriting with a stripped back, indie-rock guitar sound by the New York-based artist, and her third LP, self-produced with her partner, the guitarist/composer Julian Lage. It’s more an expansion on the sound and feel of her acclaimed 2016 debut, Emotions and Math, and a move away from her experimenting with electronica on her last, 2020’s Devotion. Here then are superbly strong melodies, and perfectly weighted changes throughout, such as on opener Act Natural, Get Back, the punchy, caustic Female Brain, or the gentler, slower, more acoustic numbers Memories, I Didn’t Think So, Irish Goodbye, or Hammer and The Nail. Strong, solid, sensitive, measured and moving. Out on ATO Records.
