A third album from the British duo of Diva-Sachy Jeffrey and Alex Headford brings an eclectic, innovative mix of indie and electronic and dream pop, with a strong flavour of shoegazey My Bloody Valentine. That rich, woozy sound is very much in the excellent swooning sound of previous Song of the Day, I Shimmer, or the vocals on Blame, but there is much more going in in this follow-up to Hyper Romance (2020) and Melt Away (2019). This is an album of dynamic emotional highs and lows, borne out of the Covid lockdown, dealing with dark thought and depression, but also filled with optimism. On Cocoon, for example, there are lines such from Headford such as “Shotgun to the face / Is this the place that I will end it?” but also later on “And I see a future, and I see a daughter / And, oh, I see a life, I look in her face,” sings Headford. Blame seeks a way out of the negative spiral. The first half of the album feels more in the dreampop / shoegaze realm, but becomes more experimental, particularly from 8 x 8 Endless with its vocal harmonies, before going full circle into the guitar-rich closing and title track. A complex, deeply emotional album, full of layers and texture, despair and hope and offering more on every listen. Out onVLF Records.
