An outstanding collaboration between the Irish actress and singer and the former Suede guitarist with this beautiful album of passionate, dramatic, folk music of various international styles, particular Americana, English and Spanish, with all the added depth, subtlety, dynamism of emotional power of both Jeff Buckley and Joni Mitchell, and also a work the likes of Anna Calvi and Laura Marling would be more than proud of. Butler chooses acoustic guitar over electric, and these songs are decorated with minimal, but extremely effective orchestration, from strings to brass, and it is as much here his production skills as playing that make this a great release. But it is Buckley’s voice with range, deft touch and power that represent the album’s greatest strengths. Opener The Eagle & The Dove is impressive enough, but it is on the title track that Buckley really cuts loose. Other standouts include 20 Years A-Growing, Babylon Days, the trumpet parts added to Seven Red Rose Tattoos, the tender, country-tinged Beautiful Regret, and Footnotes On The Map. Out on EMI.
