A decade after their acclaimed debut, the award-winning duo of Icelandic composer Ólafur Arnalds and Faroese musician Janus Rasmussen return with an emotive, uplifting release of inspired, transportive electronica. Each track title is a minimalist single-word title, the opener Grown doing as it describes, rising like a dawn with gradually emerging rich yet also clean sounds, gentle beats and hovering, jittery synths and strings, the album moving in an undulating arc through to the closing track Squared. which features a full string quartet of delicate melancholy heralding a union with clipping beats, syncopated and synths again. Along the way there are many beautiful moments, from Burst’s beats to the atmospheric clip-clop rhythms of of Sailed, the splashy wateriness and undercurrent ripples of Dazed, the funky bounce of Bound, or the rippling minimalism, piano, bell and stick sounds of Flown. From start to end, it’s a soothing, stimulating release to gently nod, stretch and tap along to, one for full immersion in this lovely luminosity of melodic and rhythmic landscape. Out on Erased Tapes.
