Variously mesmeric, chilled, smooth, staccato, slow then pacy, after many gigs and smaller releases the eight-piece London jazz and Afrobeat band finally have an LP of stirring (mostly) instrumentals that mix a variety of influences from Lagos to London, highlife, soul, funk, Stevie Wonder to Marvin Gaye to Fela Kuti. The brass and rhythm sections are standouts, especially on War Dance, led by trumpeter Sheila Maurice-Grey, or the smoother, gradually building Age of Ascent. A full album experience to enjoy, but far better to enjoy them in an intimate live setting. Out on Brownswood Recordings.
