A strong, emotional debut by singer-songwriter Tyler Dozier from Alabama, in which she address a number of issues from a strict religious upbringing to escaping from a difficult, controlling relationship. Some albums have their best songs at the top, and while opener Paradox is a decent country-style love-torn need for escapism number, the LP gets better as it goes along, breaking into other styles, particular with the short classical string short, Intro To Loss, moving into the excellent No Home, and Misandrist To Most, which has echoes of Fiona Apple as well as the country steel guitar element. On this song, as with several others, there’s a recurrent theme of self-independence “I’ll be my own best man”, while escaping the ties and guilt implied in the line: “I got a new skin/ I’m no longer a slave to all of your patriarchal sins.” The title track, also dealing with similar issues, is a slow, raw emotion affair, but builds into a stirring, powerful sound of determination to find freedom, the string section expressing yearning to take flight. Drink Your Sorrows is a catchy, rather beautiful rhythmic number, and perhaps the pick of the bunch, while closing track Left-Hand Lover ends with quiet, confident, wistful melancholy and lovely undulating flute accompaniment and builds to a high. Out on Earth Libraries.
