A fresh squeeze of catchy, grungy indie-pop comes in this very tasty debut by the Brighton quartet, tackling the struggles of young creativity, heartbreak and self-doubt with wistful humour and a great ear for melody, all with no-nonsense sound and production. Instant standout is the perky number Pop Star, in which lead singer Chloe Howard declares, drily: “I don’t wanna work my job, ’cause life is fleeting and I’m a pop star.” As well as the engaging sound, there’s a refreshing, unflinching honesty about her lyrics, such as on I Want To Be You, Love Song, or on Fears: “I fear the feeling of failure, I fear the thought of some success.” Nepotism (Baby) has a subtle dig at the kind of self-important ‘it’ person we’ve all known, and ambiguously admire but also like to bitch about: “She’s got the eyes of her best friend /She’s got the smile of a thousand puppy dog heads /Across the world it’s a known fact /That if you piss her off you’ll never get your own back.” Direct, focused, fresh and fab. Out on So Young Records.
