Brilliantly vibrant, fresh yet oddly timeless indie-pop, post-punk by the Australian duo Royel Maddell and Otis Pavlovic, with echoes of 60s-90s garage rock, 80s indie, Velvet Underground to the The Strokes, and produced here by the acclaimed Dan Carey. There’s a crisp zip to their music from the very start with Adored, followed by Fried Rice, the cleverly syncopated Foam, the agile guitars of Sonic Blue, the old-school keyboards of Heading For the Door, but perhaps the standout is the catchy shouty-out rhythmic piano banger Velvet - one that feels really original and yet drawing from any number of eras, somewhere between the Small Faces and Velvet Underground. Then there’s the snappy IHYSM or Molly, a slow, oddball track, with its doleful drum and scratchy violins, and dark, Nico-esque vocal delivery, begins rather reminiscent of the Velvet’s Venus In Furs, then morphs into a different, beautiful, shimmering melancholy, in great contrast to the pacy rest of the LP. Overall, full of influences and variety, and yet with distinct sound, there’s plenty to enjoy here, onwards into other tracks, such as catchy Glory Glory, to closer Big Ciggie, which feels like the Beatles having a jam. Out on OURNESS Records.
