The debut LP by the 22-year-old Brit School graduate who found fame with a John Lewis advert cover is commercial pop fusing the Adele ballad and Lily Allen moulds, but has a emotional edge fuelled by candidly addressing of her schizoaffective disorder. It’s hard to to get caught up in the visceral emotional pull, and heartbreak and personal struggles of songs such as What Is It About Me, Don’t Hate Me, Revolve Around Me, Money, or Pretty In Pink even if, despite a strong voice, musically it is not groundbreaking. Lyrically at times like confessional, self-detrimental social media exchanges such as on Stream of Consciousness. “This isn’t a stream of consciousness / This is more like a big fat fucking no one asked.” Through the prism of a commercial style, a tough, sharp, emotionally intelligent songwriter who turns turmoil into catharsis. Out on Day One/ Island Records.
