The Grammy-nominated vocal harmonising duo of Kenneth Pattengale and Joey Ryan from Eagle Rock, California, release a new collection of beautiful, bittersweet acoustic American folk of moving and vivid narratives. Nifty finger-picking, lovely, often dark chord progressions and melodies abide, but as well as the songwriting, it’s the pair’s perfectly intertwining playing vocals that particularly mark them out as a class act. While there’s a consistency to their style – mostly stripped back, melancholy, thoughtful gentle Americana, there’s also variation in pace and mood, from the serene addition orchestral strings on the title track to the upbeat bluegrass energy of Body & Soul. Other standouts include the beautifully dark banjo number One True Love, the waltz-time Paul Simon-esque All Of The Time In The World To Kill, When You’re Gone, Running on Sweet Smile and the sublime, slow Wheels & Levers. Conventional and traditional, but superbly crafted, and sensitively performed. Out on Far Cry Records / Thirty Tigers.
