A short but poetically vivid and emotionally stirring fourth album by the articulate, flowing Richmond, Virginia rapper and musician, a title inspired by Toni Morrison’s book trilogy, and filled with city-inspired jazz soundscapes and great guest vocalists. There’s a warmth to his style with dedication songs such as For My Mama and Tyler, Forever, but there’s a darker side with inner city guns on Run, Run, Run, and a wealth of other images and lovely orchestrations on other standouts Dedicated To Tar Feather, or Sun, I Rise with Angelica Garcia to the funkier soul of the closing title track with singer Jaylin Brown. From narrative opener, Hanif Reads Toni, and throughout, it feels like a cinematic, musical novella or long poem in itself, one to be soaked in and enjoyed in every detail. Stylish, classy, and brilliant. Out on City Slang.
