With oodles of swagger, theatricality and panache, a wonderful debut by the seasoned Deptford quartet, with witty, black-humoured 60s garage rock and stylish echoes of Siouxsie, Birthday Party-era Nick Cave, Stones, the Doors and the Kramps. Recent Song of the Day Clockwork Man is a standout, but it’s far from alone, with much else to enjoy, such as the rippling piano and thunderously rolling, lockdown-inspired Narcissist Blues (“I’m the virus and I ask the questions…”), the dramatic, dynamic, huge sound of Columbine in which, just as opener Bed of Nails and fabulously restless and rock-fuelled screaming saxophone infused (“pull yourself together and pull out…”) The Knife, all three singers contribute. The frantic energy and spiralling invention continues all the way through to thumping coffin-closers Horror Day, and Frown. A raucous, spine-tingling musical journey of excellent musicianship begun in 2021, and now finally unleashed. Available also on Bandcamp.
