Cheltenham’s innovative Tahliah Debrett Barnett returns with a fourth LP that’s more a mixtape of sensual, sexual musical sketches, her distinctive voice and style also very much reaching out to a more R&B mainstream. Coming out of high-profile and extreme relationship problems, not least with actor Shia LaBeouf, she seems have recovered with a scattergun of creativity and commercial ambition, from singles Tears in the Club and Jealousy with The Weeknd and Rema respectively. The mixtape album has an army of no less than 22 producers, as well as further guest appearances also from Pa Salieu, Shygirl, Dystopia, Daniel Caesar, Jorja Smith, and Unknown T. This may be a release that divides fans, but there are beautiful gems among the more commercial material of trap-infused R&B, bouncy grime, and reggaeton, so the more original items subjectively might be Careless, and Minds of Men, and Which Way. But from the slightly staged but fun street-style video on the steps of Hackney Town Hall video for Ride The Dragon, twigs appears to have reclaimed her freedom, self-expression, self-autonomy and sense of fun after bad relationships, though, while there’s still evidence of her undoubted talent and originality, this seems like a crossroads release looking in all directions as to where she might go next. Out on Young / Atlantic.
