A hugely enjoyable, mischievous, tuneful and genre-spanning LP by the South African-born openly gay but often masked country singer-songwriter, joined by an impressive array of co-performers doing original numbers, classics from the American songbook, plus power pop, rock and gospel. “And I believe to my soul that inside every man there's the feminine/ And inside every lady there's a deep manly voice. loud and clear/ And a cowboy may brag about things that he's done with his women/ But the ones who brag loudest are the ones that are most likely queer,” come the words right at he front of this very fun album, sung by Willie Nelson with Peck, going straight for it in the heart of Texas culture on Cowboys Are Frequently Secretly Fond of Each Other, one that describes the characters in that classic 2005 film Brokeback Mountain. Another even catchier standout is Beck and Peck, a former Song of the Day, on Death Valley High, and a fabulous vocal performance by guest Allison Russell on Chemical Sunset. Elton John obviously enjoys his turn on his own number Saturday Night’s Alright (For Fighting), while Kylie Minogue is fainter presence on an otherwise wonderful melody of Midnight Ride, but there’s lots more to enjoy on this panache-filled release. Out on Warner.
