A welcome return from the New York trio of Karen O, Nick Zinner and Brian Chase, with a fifth studio album and their first since 2013’s Mosquito, one filled with sonic menace and tenderness, with a running theme of embracing the natural world and raging against climate change and its deniers. Spitting Off The Edge of The World (featuring Perfume Genius) and Burning are the obvious jumping off points, both huge singles, Lovebomb simmers slowly repeating the word ‘time’ in a spacial otherworldliness, while Wolf, with a “taste for hell” has hug 80s synth-pop sound and Fleez has a crisp, funky guitar riff and rhythm. The final three, Blacktop, Different Today, and Mars cool the temperature a little, but only in sound and pace, the latter filled with awestruck wonder at the orb’s “heavenly fire”. Hot stuff. Out on Secretly Canadian.
