The third posthumous album since the Purple One’s untimely passing in 2016 stands out as the best for a long time, including when he was alive, packed with punchy funk, soul, and social commentary that echoes peak-period Curtis Mayfield. Right from the title track, there are killer jibes at modern culture, Google and how “the truth is a new minority” as if he was somehow prophetically alive during the Trump presidency. Other standouts include the wonderfully catchy seasonal Hot Summer, Born 2 Die, the record industry critique in Running Game (Son of a Slave Master), Yes, 1000 Light Years From Here, and the brilliant final track One Day We Will All B Free. Wonderful to hear his voice again on songs that are new to our years. So much of his material divides opinion, but this album makes us hope there’s so much more to come like this from the vaults.
