A welcome return with clever, punchy, alternative indie and a wry look at the world, from the Portland, Oregon indie duo of Sam Coomes and Janet Weiss, in their 10th album, and first for a decade since 2013’s Mole City. In 2019 Janet Weiss suffered a horrendous car accident, leaving her two broken legs and a collarbone, so it’s great, finally, and post-pandemic, to have them back, brimful with energy and ideas, with Janet’s driving drums, Sam’s funky, squelchy Rocksichord and guitar, and their interchanging vocals. Standout tracks include the stomping former Song of The Day Queen of Ears, opener Last Long Laugh, which starts slowly but builds into noisy, sharp insight, the witty, rifftastic Nowheresville, Doomscrollers, the riotous anarchy of Riots & Jokes, the slower, powerfully building and deeply ironic post-truth Gravity (“you can walk on water if you so choose - in your made-in-USA concrete shoes”, the title track, and the catchy Shitty Is Pretty. Idiosyncratic, fun and intelligent. Out on Sub Pop.
