A very mature and promising debut by the London indie-pop singer-songwriter with a broad range of timbres, moods and dynamics, from breezy pop and rock to soulful, tender acoustic and a title track about a tragedy. Her husky, and slighly hushed voice emanates from practising in low volume so as not to disturb her Zimbabwean parents, which perhaps makes for greater subtleties. There’s a wide range of emotions and styles, from the tender and wistful to punchy and bitchy and post-relationship perspective, with highlights including gorgeous opener Garden of Eden, the indie-rock The Hills, or Cold Call, the fabulous pop number, Never Need Me, the self-eviscerating beauty of My Blood. All I Ever Asked is a strong single, but was released in 2022, so perhaps didn’t need to be recycled, and closing track So My Darling is a reworking into acoustic version, though is undoubtedly beautiful. But perhaps the most powerful of all is the title track, one candidly written about her cousin’s pregnanncy and suicide. A brave and talented songwriter with much to offer. The final embedded video below is also a track-by-track guide. Out on Parlophone/Atlas Artists.
