Delicate, minimalist, intimate, poetic and candidly beautiful folk indie by Dublin’s Conor J. O'Brien in a fifth LP gentler than the last, Fever Dreams, but bringing out the finest details in this stripped back release. Even more than ever O’Brien’s voice seems to whisper and caress caresses the microphone, an expression of vulnerablity, melancholy, fear and hope with acoustic guitar and piano, all adding poignancy to lyric and pin-drop focus to the sound. Standouts include the witty and gorgeously poetic I Want What I Don’t Need (“But when I close my eyes I feel the thirst / For the laughter of the Universe/ And with a simple glimpse I must concede/ That I want what I don't need”); the title track, which has slight echoes of the quieter side of Pink Floyd (“Remember, dear, that golden time / Before you thought you had to choose / Between the shrinking violet truth / And a growing list of IOUs”), Truly Alone, Brother Hen, You Lucky One and Money On The Mind, but the entire album is one of delicate, pearlescent beauty. One of the best yet. Out on Domino.
