A wonderful double LP by the Anglo-American female-led trio of Piya Malik, Sabrina Mileo Cunningham and Nya Gazelle Brown in a joyous early 80s-style mix of disco, pop and soul. Their sound has a warm, retro feel partly because the recording process was made live to tape, written and recorded live to tape at Killion Sound studio in North Hollywood. The trio intertwine vocals through catchy funk guitar, drums and bass. Standouts include the disco-inspired C’est Si Bon, which has a lovely tinkling echo Anita Ward’s Ring My Bell, the opener, Reeling, decorated above a classic funk beat with their high, angelic vocals, the slower dance shimmer of Astral Plane, the smoochy feel of Don’t You Dare Stop, the edgier street funk of the more political Echo In The Chamber (the “Disunited States”), and the dynamic vocals, drama and catchy tension of Your Bleeding Heart. Closing title track is a 9-minute epic of soaring vocal, thrumming bass and soft sheen keyboards. A tremendous, authentic-feel release, harking back to older methods and sounds in a contemporary setting. Out on Karma Chief Records/ Colemine Records.
