The eclectic experimentalist from Doncaster, aka Doya Beardmore, with roots also in Birmingham and Mozambique, comes up with a powerful, visceral new LP, spanning indie, avant-pop, hip-hop, rock, electronica, gospel and soaring soul. It’s a unique blend that moves between styles, his vocal rich, has slight echoes of many artists, but he’s a true original. There’s a touch of Young Fathers in, for example, the track Oh, Silly George, or the opener Same Eye Colour, in the title track, also expressed in Morse Code, and especially Don’t Be Another, his full, strong baritone voice Tears For Fears. There are also elements of Arctic Monkeys and Mark Lanegan at large here too. Meanwhile the excellent Like A Heart Won’t Beat, with its handclaps and piano harks back to a gospel setting before exploding into screaming rock guitar, or Deadman, Deadman, Deadman, with its repetitive phrases and thrumming bass and electronica and synths, the long lyrical list perhaps expresses his own multifold identify. So, as the lyrics put it: “Where do we go from here?” Wither will the snake slip? So unpredictable, impossible to categorise, and impossible to ignore. Partisan Records.
