Gorgeously intricate, beautifully paced experimental folk comes in this fourth LP by the band of New Zealand’s Hollie Fullbrook, with songs that are poignant, melancholy, but also intelligently uplifting. Dogs Dreaming, among several standouts, richly captures many emotions, including that of the creative process (“The body knows what it needs / like the beat knows the drum”) before slowing down to a waltz rhythm and suggests something more intimate and erotic (“Like honey, deep in the hive, it stings to be there, but I go there all the time”). Perfectly gelling her voice and guitar playing with bassist Cass Basil, drummer Alex Freer and electric guitarist/producer Tom Healy, this is music inspired by 60s and 70s English folk of Nick Drake and the like. Based in Tāmaki Makaurau in Auckland, the lyrics are filled vivid descriptions of birds and the seashore (see The Crab/Waterbaby, Diving & Soaring and Seafoam Green) and throughout there’s a wealth of subtlety and layering, both in the the music and lyrics, that gradually unfolds. Other standouts include Dorothy Bay, and Out of Phase. A thing of beauty. Out on Milk! Records.
