A third LP of unstoppably energetic fierce, camp, queer, intelligent glam and post-punk by the New Orleans band fronted by Alli Logout following 2018’s Spiralling and 2020’s The Passion Of, a hot potent cauldron of art, sex, drugs and politics, and a big dollop of B-52s. Nathan Cassiani’s punchy, meaty bass lines are one of the key foundations, especially on (Herman’s) House, a title taken from and inspired by the 2012 documentary about an imaginative collaboration between artist Jackie Sumell and activist Herman Wallace, a member of the Black Panther Party who spent 41 years in solitary confinement after serving a life sentence for a murder he denied committing. Other standouts include Cheery Blue Intention, the title track, the oil controversy of Kurdish Radio, the take-no-prisoners fierce Concerning Peace, and the club adventurer of Midnight Legend featuring Mykki Blanco. The album ends with the slower, gradually building LA Blues, darkly funny and sweary (“If you don’t like it you can fuck right off… boo hoo, life goes on with a broken heart”) but ultimately also full of rage and grief, with the killing lines: “The end of the world is just a destination/I had to grow to love/Yes and now I know I’m not unworthy of love.” Powerfully entertaining and sharp as a pin. Out on Rough Trade.
