With a 12th album, the title and artwork inspired by the legendary funk band from their home state, the duo of singer/guitarist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney return with a collaborative spring in their step, their bluesy rock stimulated by co-writers Beck, Noel Gallagher and other guests. The band supported Beck Hansen in their early noughties days, so this is a union 20 years in the making, and one that seems highly complementary, with Beck and Auerbach’s voices at times interchangeable. Beck peps up their style with seven songs, variously with funk, hip hop and more , especially the single Beautiful People (Stay High), opener This Is Nowhere, and Paper Crown (featuring also Juicy J), one of several collaborations. Gallagher meanwhile contributes on three tracks with classic influences, such as the slower, Beatles-esque, and anthemic On The Game, or the 70s glam stomp Only Love Matters. Full of vim and vigour, it’s chock full with strutting tunes, such as Don’t Let Me Go, Candy and Her Friends (with Lil Nord), and a soulful cover of I Forgot to Be Your Lover by William Bell and Booker T. Jones. Out on Easy Eye Sound/ Nonesuch Records.
