A gorgeous new LP by the Merseyside artist, with her distinctive blend of tender, melancholic synth-pop, but here also some avant-garde jazz and gently surreal, newer pastures of otherworldly, vivid psychedelia, and a first guest producer in the form of the excellent John Parish, who has also worked with PJ Harvey and Aldous Harding. Opener Perfect Storm conjures images of the subconscious, vignettes of someone frantic, who can foresee something unfortunate on the horizon. The title track is about searching for joy and love, uncovering it in unusual places and in the smallest, hidden things in life, and “explores connecting with nature and your surroundings as opposed to other people - focusing on autonomy, new beginnings and feeling bewitched.” Emotional Components, Romantic Worlds and the folky, then morphing into gentle krautrock closing track, Family of the Sun, are just some of the many other highlights here. It’s an album that very much transports you elsewhere, each musical element slipping into place with the perfect weight and dreamy pace. From an artist who pursues her own path with an uncompromising vision, this, like 2021’s album Flock, is among her very best. Out on Fire Records.
