Catchy, toe-tapping, wistful, melodic and witty, the New Brighton, Merseyside band’s 60s-influenced psychedelic indie-pop has echoes of the of the LA’s and The Coral, but also draws influences from Bob Dylan, blues and country. Frontman Zak McDonnell’s father David is also a former member of The Coral. That spectrum gradually moves across the album, the jangly guitar north-west sound in the first half, with standout tracks England, My England, and opener Lola In The Morning, before the slower, piano-led This Time Around, before the electric Dylanesque White Shadow Blues at the track 7, after which Matt Gouldson’s lap steel comes more to the fore on The Last Temptation and closing track Angel of the North. Retro but still fresh and vibrant. Out on Run On Records.
