Lancaster’s loveable DIY rockers Holly Ross and David Blackwell return with another punchy collection of comedy, simplicity, profundity and creativity, psych and punk, but also some old-school synth sounds and some complex emotions. Retro electronica is as much to the fore as Ramones-style fuzz guitar on this album, and with returning co-producer Dave Fridmann involved, perhaps it’s no surprise there’s sometimes echoes of The Flaming Lips and Grandaddy in the psychedelic mix, particularly the seven-minute Nothing/Everything, which has tender notes and a beautiful melancholy. Before that however, after the mischievous curtain raising Intro, the album explodes full punk with Death Grip Kids and a funny/angry declaration of ongoing creative independence as Holly declares: “Shove your funding up your arse/ We don’t want your money!” Meeting Friends At Night mixes art punk with synth pop, but perhaps the standouts are My Mood Wave, a beautiful indie number, capturing the mixed emotions of the album, and Memory Man. Again both utilise that trademark repeat phrase pattern with down-to-earth humour. Things is also classic surreal comedy Eggs, drolly listing “beautiful things” and beginning with Holly doing a DIY mouthing of riff and rhythm before it kicks in, including “a baking tray signed by Yoko Ono”, something that could come straight out of a Half Man Half Biscuit lyric. Perhaps one of the most telling tracks is the gentler, slower I Am Gaia (perhaps also a contrasting reference to their past track I Am Moron) opening with repeated line “When you tell the crowd you’re broken and they clap for me”, a candid reveal at just how exhausting it is to run an independent band, as well as fabulously anarchic and fun YouTube channel Eggs TV, daily promotional chores, constantly writing emails and all the other hard work involved, as well as being wife to David and mother to their son.
So then – an album existential, surreal and philosophical – all in inimitable Eggs style, just as the title suggest. But that’s testament to the brilliance of The Lovely Eggs, they are unstoppably themselves, doing what they do, refreshing, honest, funny and always brilliant live. Out on Bandcamp, and Egg Records via their website.
