The ninth studio album by the Brooklyn-based Ohio five-piece of the Dessner brothers co, is textured, often slow, reflective and beautifully poetic, capturing singer Matt Berninger’s hopefully winning battle with depression, and includes includes guest Taylor Swift, Phoebe Bridgers and Sufjan Stevens. Lyrics are often vivid, sometimes abstract, melancholy, dream-like, memory-filled, tender, feelings swimming to the surface from the subconscious. Standouts include the fabulously titled former Song of the Day New Order T-Shirt (“Split-second glimpses and snapshots and sounds / You in my New Order T-shirt / Holding a cat and a glass of beer”), Once Upon A Poolside (with Sufjan Stevens), Your Mind Is Not Your Friend (with Phoebe Bridgers), The Alcott (with Taylor Swift) (“I get myself twisted in threads”), Eucalyptus, and the slightly more upbeat in style, thrumming Tropic Morning News (“I was suffering more than I let on”). Strong, sensitive, gently powerful. Out on 4AD.
